History

In the mid-1960s, the Navajo (predecessor to the Navajo Chieftain) appeared as a new aircraft with a new size category in aviation and was available in a normal version with Lycoming IO-540 engines. Pilots saw it as a significant step forward, offering size, robustness and cabin comfort. Surprisingly, with proper maintenance, it was considered one of the easiest twin-engine aircraft to fly. Piper positioned them for corporate and commuter use and enjoyed success in both markets. Over 3,350 Navajos were sold in the first 14 years as the model evolved while retaining its core identity. The first version had a short production run and ended in the 1960s.
